"Oliver Paul, twenty years old/Thick head of hair, worries he's going bald," Courtney Barnett sings at the beginning of "Elevator Operator," a strong introduction to her debut full-length. If there's any more apt description of what it feels like to be an anxiety-ridden and confused twenty-something on the cusp of proper adulthood, the only place you're likely to find it is elsewhere on this album. Barnett has a particular knack for neurotic quips that are as genuine as they are self-mocking. Later in the same song, she remarks, "I'm not suicidal, just idling insignificantly;" in "Pedestrian at Best," she's "having an existential time-crisis." While she's certainly not mining new territory, her approach is what's novel: by avoiding cliche and emphasizing the minutiae of everyday life, she finds more meaning than generalizations alone possess.

There are two sides to this album, the most immediate of which is encapsulated in songs like the aforementioned "Elevator Operator" and "Pedestrian at Best," as well as the sardonically-titled "Nobody Really Cares If You Don't Go to the Party." These are characterized by muscular, feedback-saturated guitars reminiscent of '90s grunge and Barnett's rapid-fire delivery of her conversational lyrics. While her vaguely off-key, Australian-accented sing-talking can grow tiresome, there's also charm and charisma in it; I can't imagine any other voice delivering these songs as genuinely. Despite her lyrics' long-windedness, her melodies are never aimless. I haven't enjoyed shouting along to any other chorus more than that of "Pedestrian at Best," in which Barnett pokes fun at the prevailing opinion of older generations toward millennials: "Put me on a pedestal, and I'll only disappoint you/Tell me I'm exceptional, I promise to exploit you/Give me all your money, and I'll make some origami, honey/I think you're a joke, but I don't find you very funny."

The other half of the album is more reflective and expansive but packs just as much punch as the higher-energy moments. "Small Poppies" and "Kim's Caravan" are both over six minutes, building from bluesy, lackadaisical beginnings to heavy and atmospheric walls of sound, over which Barnett wails with unexpected passion. The latter is especially affecting, culminating in a swirling, ominous repetition of the lines, "Don't ask me what I really mean/I am just a reflection of what you really want to see/So take what you want from me." It's the most vulnerable, revealing moment on the album.

Then there's "Depreston," which a lot of people have championed as one of the best songs of the year and rightfully so. On its surface, it's the story of a young couple going house-searching; beneath that, it's a searing expose of the mundanity of domesticity ("It's got a lovely garden, a garage for two cars to park in/Or a lot of room for storage if you've just got one") and the trappings of consumerism ("Now we got that percolator/Never made a latte greater/I'm saving 23 dollars a week"). The music remains as static as its narrator's life until the final moments, when it breaks down into the sad refrain, "If you've got a spare half a million/You could knock it down and start rebuilding," revealing the unattainability of the couple's dreams. It's a sobering message that Barnett conveys with impressive nuance, a skill which she'll hopefully refine even further in the future.

From their name alone, it's obvious that Elvis Depressedly are a band that don't take themselves too seriously. Yes, they write sad songs that sound more than a little like they came straight out of the basement of a reclusive twenty-something who spends all of his time writing bad poetry, strumming his guitar, and feeling sorry for himself. But there's also a self-awareness in New Alhambra that sets it apart from your typical sad-sack guy with a guitar music. This, along with the youthful abandon present in its lo-fi production, ramshackle instrumentation, and earworm melodies, gives the twenty-minute album a surprising amount of staying power.

In all honesty, I didn't think I liked New Alhambra the first time I heard it. It was hard for me to embrace the lo-fi atmosphere and short song lengths, both of which I've tended to be put off by in general. However, months later, I'd randomly find melodies and lyrics resurfacing from the recesses of my memory; there was something hypnotic and addictive about them that I just couldn't shake. Near the end of the year, I returned to the album with a fresh perspective, and this time it clicked.

Its seeming simplicity is what can make it seem initially underwhelming. The songs are so brief and understated that they'll flow right past your ears if you aren't actively listening. Each one is a strange but endearing mishmash of electronic and organic instrumentation, strung together by ominous soundbites and Mathew Lee Cothran's wavering, apathetic vocals, always distorted to sound like they're submerged underwater. Tracks like "Thou Shall Not Murder" and "New Heaven, New Earth" are spacey and relaxed, built on intertwining guitar and string melodies. The latter, especially, is gorgeous but devastating, with lyrics that speak to struggles with self-worth and being confident in one's own skin ("I only understand this body for its needs;" "My cage is beautiful, but insincere; "Violate my world/I'm not a person"). Meanwhile, "N.M.S.S." - an acronym for the repeated refrain, "No more sad songs," a humorous nod to the fact that these are only sad songs - is more energetic, with finger snaps even, but no less melancholy.

The common thread running through these tracks is just how perfectly, in lyrics and sound, they encapsulate the contradictory experiences of young adulthood, especially in the battle between detachment and passion that underlies them. The album's thesis is no better stated than on the closing track, "Wastes of Time," which clocks in at a mere minute and a half. Accompanied only by acoustic guitar, Cothran's voice is clear, as if he has finally crawled out from beneath the distortion and muddle. He sings, "If you try, I will try/If we fuck up, it's alright/There's so much more to life/Than all these wastes of time," and despite the tremble in his voice, you can't help but believe him.

I discovered Emma Ruth Rundle's gorgeous solo album, Some Heavy Ocean, a few months too late for it to make my 2014 list. Luckily, the fact that she's a part of so many other musical projects means I still get to include her in 2015, this time with her post-rock band, Marriages. While Salome isn't one of the most innovative albums I've heard this year, it's certainly one of the most consistent, and sometimes a damn good rock album is all you really need to be satisfied. The vast, atmospheric, and richly-textured soundscapes that this trio is capable of crafting are impressive, and Rundle's witchy voice is versatile and commanding enough to hold its own against the relentless wall of sound.

In fact, the album is so consistent in both mood and quality that it's hard to pick out individual highlights: this similarity between tracks is actually a good thing, as it adds up to a spectacularly immersive sonic world, a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Still, after repeated listens, small nuances begin to make themselves apparent, proving that there is more to gain from the album than its surface implies.

"The Liar" is aggressive out the gate, transitioning from a hypnotic, spiraling guitar intro into a slinky, mysterious labyrinth of noise. Rundle's voice explodes from a whisper that barely seeps through the cracks of the instrumentation into a vicious snarl, wailing passionately, "You lie, you lie and suffer my name/It's mine, it's mine to give or take it/So throw me in that deep black hole of his hell." Directly following, "Skin" is more shoegaze-leaning, layered with woozy synths and fuzzy guitars that take their time expanding into a galactic chorus. This influence carries over into "Binge," which drifts seamlessly between dreamy, free-associative verses ("So loud/The voice/The life/I take/The sand/From ground/To hand") and a terrifyingly unhinged chorus ("I have come from Hell/And I should know what love is"). The title track is more expansive, allowing its layers of sound to build more subtly around Rundle's almost tender delivery, which soon twists into a sinister thing, dark and distorted, muttering incantations: "Oh, Salome, Salome/Won't you dance for me, dance for me/I would give anything, anything/If you would bring him to his knees."

While Salome is largely painted in shades from the same palette, the result is far more engaging than one might expect. The more carefully one listens, the more clearly these shades differentiate themselves from one another, revealing subtle flourishes and varying techniques. At the same time, these songs sit comfortably together, connected by a clear sense of purpose and direction and guided by the skill of musicians who know exactly where they want their music to lead.

"Wish I could write songs about anything other than death," Julien Baker sings on Sprained Ankle's title track. It's true that the album is preoccupied with darkness (not only death but isolation, mental illness, and substance abuse), and when you realize that Baker is only nineteen years old, her intimate knowledge of suffering becomes even more harrowing. But there's also relief in the fact that she has overcome her past struggles successfully enough to speak on them so maturely and intelligently. Sprained Ankle is catharsis in its purest form: it hurts like hell, but it also heals, proving that sometimes the quickest way to cut through sorrow is simply to attack it head-on.

It would be easy to criticize the album for being musically unadventurous, as it doesn't veer far from the stripped-back presentation traditionally associated with singer-songwriter acts. But this would be to miss the point entirely: Baker's aim is not to impress with technical proficiency but to provoke with emotional potency, and too many bells and whistles would undermine this. Her quivering and unpolished but heartwrenchingly passionate vocals are rarely accompanied by anything more than reverb-heavy guitar, creating a cavernous atmosphere to match her soul-searching lyrics.

Bravely, opener "Blacktop" is the album's most vulnerable and bare moment, lullaby-esque with its hushed vocals and gentle guitar, though its lyrics suggest a brush with something far more fatal than sleep, with its references to ambulances and "a saline communion . . . held like a séance." It sets up the narrative pervading the entire album of the singer coming face-to-face with her own mortality and, consequently, being forced to rebuild her life from the ground up. Naturally, the fear of abandonment surfaces often, most palpably in the conclusion of "Everybody Does." Her voice so raspy with desperation that it makes even the listener's throat ache, Baker sings, "I know I'm a pile of filthy wreckage you will wish you'd never touched/You're gonna run when you find out who I am."

Meanwhile, "Rejoice" deals with the isolation caused by the guilt and anger felt upon surviving an addiction that has swallowed so many others whole. Although Baker admits that "I think there's a god and he hears either way when I rejoice and complain," she finds herself dissatisfied with religion's potential to provide comfort, going on to demand accusatively, "Why did you let them leave and then make me stay?" The catharsis reaches its peak in "Go Home" when Baker, sounding more weary and jaded than any teenager ever should, admits over sparse piano accompaniment, "I'm tired of washing my hands/God, I want to go home." This transitions into a staticky radio sermon that's cryptic and inconclusive, certainly, but, like the rest of the album, feels truest to life's constant uncertainty.

Aly Spaltro, previously known as Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and now as simply Lady Lamb, is a difficult woman to pin down. She refuses to be pigeonholed into a specific genre, injecting punk-rock energy into songs firmly rooted in folk but laden with enough brilliant hooks to make any pop songwriter jealous. I went into After without any knowledge of Spaltro's previous work and still have yet to acquaint myself with it, so it's hard to say how this album compares. But, on its own merits, it's consistently engaging, endearingly passionate, and wholly inventive without sacrificing accessibility.

Much of the album's power lies in its dynamic variability, on display not only from song to song but within each song individually. Opener "Vena Cava" is a prime example of this musical spontaneity, transitioning unexpectedly between verses carried only by a clean electric guitar riff and Spaltro's warm but rough-edged vocals and a chorus that explodes in a burst of distorted aggression. "Heretic" and "Spat Out Spit" similarly trade on the jarring but somehow natural juxtaposition of jagged swaths of rollicking noise and interludes of understated, reflective folk. Spaltro's voice, whose closest comparison point is an earthier Leslie Feist, remains front and center through it all, a commanding mouthpiece for her introspective lyrics. She just as compellingly delivers a quiet, observant line like, "I'm sitting on the train and I am peeling an orange," as an emotionally potent one like, "Was I born wild? Have I been asleep this whole damn time, dreaming up a lie?"

But most impressive of all are the songs that transcend this formula. "Violet Clementine" is delightfully whimsical and technicolor, borrowing from psychedelic influences. It opens with a powerfully-belted a cappella melody and gradually builds layers of instrumentation and vocals, each more infectious than the last, over top of one another. Although it operates largely on repetition, the song somehow maintains excitement and surprise anyway, feeling like at any moment it could go off the rails and turn in an entirely opposite direction. "Ten," on the other hand, is less chaotic, a heartfelt, sprawling ballad about childhood, memory and growing up that sounds as nostalgic as the experiences its lyrics recount.

Spaltro's biggest talent is her ability to make each of the album's twelve songs sound singular and newly thrilling, despite many of them relying on an arguably formulaic approach. While After could probably benefit from some trimming (it's nearly an hour long, a length which doesn't feel entirely warranted), it's hard not to be won over by its energy and enthusiasm, qualities that never wane or go stale, even upon repeated listens.

I find Father John Misty's shtick amusing as often as I find it annoying and his lyrics clever as often as I find them cloying. For me, it all boils down to the impression Josh Tillman gives off of thinking he's the smartest person in the room, even when he's poking fun at himself, which makes me roll my eyes more with every listen. Still, on a purely musical level, it's hard to deny the instant appeal of I Love You, Honeybear, which features plenty of immaculately-crafted songwriting and benefits greatly from Tillman's rich vocal tone and personable delivery, all of which goes a long way to temper the album's less easily palatable aspects.

Tillman's cynical wit works best, in my opinion, when he's using it to skewer either himself or broader issues of politics and American culture (where things get dicey is in those moments when his self-mockery veers dangerously close to becoming an excuse to target specific people just because he can). This is most clearly on display in "The Ideal Husband" and "Bored in the USA." The former is viciously self-critical, featuring Tillman wailing his way through a laundry list of fatal character flaws ("Every woman that I've slept with/Every friendship I've neglected/Didn't call when Grandma died/I spend my money getting drunk and high") before exclaiming sarcastically, "Let's put a baby in the oven/Wouldn't I make the ideal husband?" The latter simply shouldn't work at all, from its canned audience laughter to its ridiculously melodramatic one-liners ("Save me, white Jesus!"), but Tillman's spot-on delivery sells every minute of it.

Such unabashed grandiosity carries over into the album's more sincere moments as well. The title track lays the romanticism on thick; full to the brim with swooning strings and lyrics that unapologetically shout their infatuation from rooftops, it's the musical equivalent of a public proposal but so damn earnest that it's hard not to say "yes." "When You're Smiling and Astride Me" is similarly unsubtle in its attempt at blue-eyed soul, complete with slow-burning organ, slide guitar, and gospel choir, yet all the more endearing for so proudly wearing its heart on its sleeve. And "Holy Shit," purportedly written on Tillman's wedding night, ups the intensity further by comparing the institution of marriage to everything from "ancient holy wars, dead religions, holocausts" to "age-old gender roles, infotainment, capital" before making the optimistic declaration of his own relationship, "Maybe love is just an economy based on resource scarcity/What I fail to see is what that's got to do with you and me."

Ultimately, despite the music being so instantly enjoyable, it's difficult to clearly define where Father John Misty as a character ends and Josh Tillman as a person begins, which vaguely unsettles me as a listener - it's impossible to know how much of what he says to take seriously. Others may not have an issue with this. At any rate, I Love You, Honeybear is always intriguing and certainly worthy of a place on this list.

All Around Us proves that minimalism and simplicity are not one and the same. While these songs carry a sense of effortless clarity, they also reveal the immense amount of control required to maintain such a consistent atmosphere. Moreover, it's an album I'm still getting to know and one that isn't really benefited by snap judgments. I imagine that once I've had more time to uncover all of its secrets, I'll wish I'd placed it higher.
