At this point, it's beyond cliche to start off an end of the year list by proclaiming how profoundly shitty 2017 was in general, but it's also true: mostly everything sucked, and there wasn't much joy to be found. I said essentially the same thing last year, but if I had the means, I would trade 2017 for 2016 in a heartbeat. Except for the music. In my opinion, every year is a good year for music, but I can honestly say that it saved me from wallowing in complete desolation many, many times this year in particular. Even though a staggering amount of my established favorites released quite good albums over the past 12 months (some of which are represented here), it was overwhelmingly artists I'd only casually enjoyed, dismissed altogether, or never previously listened to that ended up impressing me the most. Most of my reliable favorites, even though I still love them, just weren't giving me that "wow" factor feeling anymore. Luckily, I was able to find it in lots of other places I'd only shallowly explored before.
As usual, rankings were the most difficult aspect to pin down. At first, I tried being more methodological, using star ratings and play counts to justify placing one album over another. This felt dishonest, though, because statistics can only go so far when it comes to quantifying gut feelings and also because a lot of stuff I played the hell out of early in the year fell almost entirely out of rotation by the end. Ultimately, I came to my final arrangement using entirely intangible concepts like staying value, emotional impact, personal relevance, and freshness of sound. There may be a bit of recency bias at play, too, but I also genuinely think I liked many of the releases I heard in the second half of the year better and will continue to, even after their newness wears off.
It's a bit ironic to end this rambling introduction by saying I'm now going to let the albums speak for themselves, but I've already pitched them intensely enough in my quarterly review posts. At this point, anything else would just be indulgent gushing into the void. Instead, enjoy my attempt at a visually-appealing presentation aesthetic, then listen to the playlist, note your favorites, go out into the world, and discover.
